Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn boast millions of users in multiple countries. The numbers are impressive, but what are some ways we can use all of this social media to our advantage?
1. Be yourself.
Sure, you could portray yourself as a brilliant, world-famous, multimillionaire supermodel. (Hey, I’m not saying you’re not.) But what is the purpose of social media if not to connect real people with other real people? Use social media to make honest, real life connections.
2. Add value to the site.
You have information and experience that is valid, unique and useful. Actively participate in social media, and share your knowledge with others.
3. Reach out.
If you’re curious about a certain topic (skydiving karaoke, anyone?), someone out there has the answers to your questions. Find a person who’s in the know, then strike up a conversation.
4. Provide support.
Every now and then we all need a little encouragement or advice. If you’ve been through an especially challenging experience, consider being a mentor to someone who is going through the same thing.
5. Use sparingly.
Don’t let electronic relationships overwhelm your life. There is no substitute for face-to-face time with loved ones, professional associates, old friends or new friends. Set definitive limits on how much time you spend on social media sites, and don’t forget to nurture your real life relationships!
