Watch TV on any evening and you’ll see a bevy of glitzy, cutting-edge commercials designed to make us want new cars, soft drinks, cable services, snack foods, you name it.
That’s why I watch TV in the morning. CNN or MSNBC usually. Why?
Because that’s where I get to watch the best commercials on TV: financial commercials.
No matter how many cool animations or how-did-they-do-that effects I see, I crave the simple, unadulterated, character-driven story. I never get tired of a white world dressed with a single, perfectly-cast actor who could be someone I know. One of my current favorites is this black-and-white spot for Edward Jones:

Another top pick: the surprising framing and eye line employed in the current Mutual of Omaha campaign:
Sure, I laugh like an idiot at nudity-themed spots like the Super Bowl-banned Bud Light commercial:
But the “bottom” line for me is: subtlety and story are still king.
